Secure Flood Protection with Post-Tensioned Ground Anchors

Background

The Montgomery Wharf development on the River Thames required a robust flood defence system to protect this new waterside housing development. As part of this defence system, a 156-meter-long sheet pile wall was installed and anchored using 56x Ischebeck Titan post-tensioned ground anchors. This engineering solution will ensure long-term protection of the development whilst ensuring environmental compliance and non-contamination of the River Thames during construction.

Ground Conditions

The ground conditions consisted of Made Ground and Alluvium, overlaying Kempton Park Gravels and London Clay. The gravels predominantly provided the required skin friction for the 18nm long anchors. GI reports were vague concerning the extent of the gravels, so a key challenge was achieving the desired anchor length, as the buildings foundations would encroach on anchors longer than 20m.
